Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commercial Construction Controller to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of commercial construction projects, including budget management, forecasting, cost control, financial reporting, and compliance with accounting standards. This role is integral to ensuring that projects are completed within budget and on schedule while maintaining financial accuracy and integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Management: Oversee and manage all financial operations of commercial construction projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time and within budget.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and maintain project budgets, providing accurate forecasting and tracking of expenses and revenue.
- Cost Control & Reporting: Monitor and control project costs, track variations, and ensure cost-effective utilization of resources.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare and present financial statements, including profit and loss reports, balance sheets, and cash flow reports, ensuring timely and accurate reporting to senior management.
- Project Cash Flow Management: Manage project cash flows, including invoicing, payment schedules, and coordination with project managers to ensure financial alignment with project timelines.
- Contract & Change Order Management: Review and manage contracts, amendments, and change orders, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to financial agreements.
- Risk Management & Compliance: Identify potential financial risks, implement mitigation strategies, and ensure compliance with accounting regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
- Audit & Tax Coordination: Coordinate with internal and external auditors, tax advisors, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate audits and tax filings.
- Financial Analysis: Provide insights on the financial performance of construction projects, analyzing variances and recommending corrective actions.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including AP/AR teams, ensuring efficient financial operations and professional development.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field. A CPA or CMA designation is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management or controlling within the commercial construction industry, with a strong understanding of construction cost accounting.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Procore, Sage 300) and Microsoft Excel. Experience with ERP systems is a plus.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, cost controls, and financial reporting.
- Attention to Detail: High attention to detail and accuracy in financial analysis, reporting, and documentation.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify financial discrepancies and develop effective solutions.
- Time Management: Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Leadership: Proven leadership and team management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across various departments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with construction-specific financial software and tools.
- Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Advanced certifications such as CPA or CMA.
- Knowledge of bonding, insurance, and lien waivers as they pertain to construction contracts.
